Printing Office (Ka Hale Pa'i)

This structure was completed in 1841 and used as additional sleeping quarters by the mission. Today it contains a replica of the first printing press to be brought to Hawai'i. Some of the first books and printed materials in Hawai'i were produced at the Honolulu Printing Office which originally stood across King Street where the Mission Auditorium stands today. The restored printing office shows how early Protestant Missionaries and native Hawaiians collaborated on the production of numerous books and other printed materials first printed in the Hawaiian language.
